Recent sketches from my trip on the East Coast. Fantastic clouds there! I also got to see the Turner show and a nice collection of Dutch landscape paintings from the 17th century at the Met in NYC. In addition a real highlight was getting together with Jim Gurney and his wife Jeanette for some outdoor plein air painting.. lots of fun. My friend Bill Mather joined me too.

Absolutely gorgeous. It's nice to see the work that Gurney ha talked about you painting. Amazing cloud sketches. I really like the wispy strokes in your work. Were these watercolor and gouache?

Jim or James Gurney as he is known via the Dinotopia books. He has an amazing blog, called Gurney's Journey that he updates almost daily with terrific art and illustration information.

Regarding the cloud sketches, it was a combination of watercolor to start with, then progressive layers of diluted gouache. The wide cloudscape is mostly watercolor for a change, rather than generous amounts of white gouache.

It's very very much Constable.
I'm guessing the visit to the Turner show and old landscape masters must have had an (unconcious) effect.

Love the warmth of the gouache. D you mix some yellow and red in the white for the highlights in the clouds? Also love the dramatic light and shadows of the hills in the background. I'm convinced you must have Scottish roots!
