Your build up is great! It's different the blurred out parts, what kind of roll do they play? I mean i never seen (yet) anybody approach their work like that. Looking forward to more...Bless
Margplum - The places are invented from doodles and sketches with Ruins as a theme. I've been to Rome and Naples and this is inspired from that and the great 16-17th century masters of architectural fantasies, like Hubert Robert,Piranesi,Jean-Laurent Legeay, Jean-Francois Janinet, Herman van Swanevelt and many others. Sketches like this are more like a dream, a theatrical production in the sense of experiences rather than things. Atmospheric vs. the material form.

Domaz - It turns out the blurred parts are a combo of scaling up the small thumbnail start and using a blending brush at times as well. The painting is still in-progress so I like to use an almost abstract base to develop into something suggestive. I'm saving steps to share later, so you can see.
Very, very good work. I am in awe. It's the combination of the blurriness, plus tight control of light-and-shadow (it was an excellent choice, to be so stingy on the highlights) that results in a painting this good.
These are really great. I love your description of atmosphere vs. material things. The difference is really important I think when painting and you do it so well! You really raise the bar with each painting you do!
We went up to Mendocino this past weekend. I took your course last year. Once again, I had SUCH a difficult time even trying to figure out what to paint! Everything is so beautiful! My mind gets overloaded up there!
Thanks for mentioning those painters in your response to someone else. I will check them out. Reading the book' "The Judgment of Paris". Great one for art history pre-salon and post-salon era.

Beautiful - I love the motion through it and the play of the warm ruins off the cool sky. The archways looking like eyes makes the place feel alive.
