A study of river side woods with the great Barbizon school painters in mind, in particular the friendship between Harpignies and Corot is evoked. I can't even imagine
how wonderful sketching and painting the Italian country side must have been in the 1860's with these great ones.
Gouache & watercolor on hot press paper with pastel pencil, pastel stick, sepia pen/ink and touches of lifting out with paper towel. 24,5 x 10,5 cm.

Beatiful Erik. There is a nice serene quality to to this piece, especially in those cool shadow tones in the foreground.

While I am reading your post I'm thinking about a book you certainly would like (if you do not already have it) It is called "In the Light of Italy: Corot and Early Open-Air Painting" It is one of my favourite books. It is actually the catalogue of an exhibition I never had the change to see. The people you talk about in your posts are all there!

Wow I wish I can see that Corot book, it is over $250 now on amazon, maybe I will luck out in a used book store. The whole tradition of the outdoor color,value study since Claude Lorrain has created the foundation of landscape painting back in the studio. I would like to see more artist work from memory rather than from photos if possible, it really becomes more personal.
